Prepress atau Pracetak adalah semua proses digital untuk menyiapkan desain cetak (artwork, graphic design) dengan menggunakan perangkat komputer, dimulai dari input data sampai desain siap cetak atau Final Artwork. Semua hal yang dilakukan saat membuat layout artwork dengan menggunakan beragam Software Grafis populer seperti Adobe Photoshop, Macromedia Freehand, Illustrator, CorelDraw, PageMaker, InDesign atau QuarkExpress, dsb adalah aktifitas yang termasuk tahapan PrePress yang dilakukan oleh pelaku usaha percetakan.

Jadi ada beberapa aturan yang harus diikuti oleh desainer grafis handal, sehingga desain yang dibuat akan dicetak dengan hasil yang konsisten (hampir 100% sama persis) dengan apa yang terlihat di monitor komputer. Dari pengalaman penulis di lapangan, terangkum fakta bahwa banyak sekali terjadi kesalahan pada pencetakan, dikarenakan pekerjaan desain grafis yang tidak benar pada tahap Prepress atau pracetak ini. Banyak kendala yang perlu diantisipasi supaya hasil akhir suatu barang cetakan terlihat sempurna.

Inilah daftar masalah yang patut diperhatikan dan diwaspadai pada saat tahap Prepress berlangsung:

Rule #1: Missing or incorrect fonts.
Hal ini terjadi apabila kita memilih/memakai font yang tidak terdefinisi oleh printer postscript. Atau font yang digunakan tidak ikut dicopy ke disc saat di bawa ke percetakan (apabila kita mendesain sendiri halaman publikasi-kemudian dikirim ke percetakan), sedangkan di percetakan font tersebut tidak tersedia. Untuk itu, copy-lah font tersebut atau di-convert terlebih dahulu dalam desain artwork sebelum diserahkan ke percetakan / tempat pembuatan film. Usahakan sebelum meng-convert dokumen artwork dalam proses prepress, save-lah terlebih dahulu format teks aslinya secara terpisah sebagai dokumen cadangan.

Rule #2: Scans supplied in wrong file format.
Artwork cetak biasanya menggunakan format file .TIFF atau .EPS untuk gambar. Sehingga kalau Anda mendefinisikan file gambar Anda ke JPEG atau GIF dan lainnya untuk keperluan cetak offset, maka warnanya tidak akan sesuai dengan hasil cetak dan kualitas pixel (unsur terkecil dari gambar digital) akan rusak. Untuk kualitas cetak bagus, besaran dpi-nya minimal 300 dpi.

Rule #3: Incorrect page setting or Page Set-up.
Jangan membuat setting halaman lebih besar dari kebutuhan cetak. Misalnya untuk artwork ukuran kertas A4 timbal balik, Anda menggunakan ukuran kertas A3 yang Anda bagi menjadi dua. Gunakan set-up halaman sesuai ukuran yang diperlukan.

Rule #4: Missing graphics. or graphic not linked.
Walaupun Anda sudah memasukkan gambar Anda ke dalam halaman artwork yang Anda desain di PageMaker atau Quark Express, Anda tetap harus mengcopy file gambar Anda ke dalam disk yang Anda kirim ke percetakan atau tempat pembuatan film (repro).

Rule #5: Resolution too high or too low in scans supplied by customer.
Resolusi adalah tingkat kecerlangan (dpi, dot per inch, pixel per inch) pada gambar. Terlalu tinggi resolusi akan menyebabkan hasil yang tidak maksimal dan berlebihan sehingga memboroskan tinta. Sementara resolusi yang didefinisikan terlalu rendah akan menyebabkan gambarnya pecah atau kabur.

Rule #6: File defined with incorrect colours.
Karena unsur warna yang digunakan monitor (komputer) berbeda dengan unsur warna cetak (percetakan) maka sering terjadi hasil cetak yang meleset warnanya. Hal ini harus kita pahami, karena komputer grafis menggunakan unsur warna sinar Red, Green, Blue (RGB Color). Sementara percetakan menggunakan unsur warna tinta Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black (CMYK Color). Jadi kita harus menggunakan warna CMYK apabila kita ingin membuat artwork cetak. Kalau sudah terlanjur menggunakan RGB, maka rubahlah kedalam format warna CMYK.

Rule #7: Make the Black color as a special one.
Sebaiknya tidak menggunakan warna selain hitam untuk mewarnai teks (apalagi huruf kecil2) atau garis outline pada arwork yang anda buat. Ini untuk mencegah teks/garis menjadi terlihat dobel karena registrasi yang kurang presisi. Bila ada teks yang perlu direvisi pada saat2 terakhir sebelum dicetak, anda hanya perlu mengganti selembar film saja pada warna Black-nya, tidak perlu mengganti 3 lembar lainnya (Cyan, Magenta dan Yellow).

Rule #8: No laser or digital printing proof supplied.
Sebelum dicetak, kita harus melakukan proofing untuk mengetahui contoh hasil cetak nantinya. Nah, kalau kita mencetak hasil proofing dengan menggunakan printer selain printer laser atau color digital printing, biasanya hasilnya akan meleset dari perkiraan. Sekarang sudah banyak printer warna digital – digital printing – sampai ukuran A3+ sebagai sarana proofing sebelum naik cetak. Lebih baik lagi bila anda membuat Progressive Proof untuk mengejar presisi warna yang cocok sesuai tuntutan kualitas yang anda inginkan.

Itulah hal-hal yang perlu diperhatikan saat Anda menyiapkan sendiri artwork pada tahap prepress. Sebaiknya Anda tetap berkonsultasi dengan sesama Graphic Designer untuk mendapatkan second opinion terhadap hasil artwork anda, atau diskusikan hal tersebut di atas dengan tempat pembuatan film langganan / percetakan Anda.

Sebagai desainer kita selalu di tuntut untuk selalu produktif, baik bagi yang berkarir secara freelance atau yang bekerja dengan orang lain. Biasanya yang menjadi permasalahan adalah waktu, walaupun secara teori mengatur waktu itu mudah, namun pada prakteknya sangat-sangat tidak mudah.

Untungnya sekarang teknologi sudah sangat memadai dan sangat membantu kita. Dalam hal ini kita akan menggunakan aplikasi berbasis Adobe Air. Selain karena ringan dan mudah di install, pilihan yang ada begitu banyak. Tetapi tentu tidak semua aplikasi bersifat gratis, mayoritas merupakan aplikasi berbayar, walaupun kualitasnya juga sesuai dengan harganya.

Untuk itu saya mau membagikan 5 aplikasi Adobe Air yang gratis dan bisa menunjang pekerjaan kita sebagai desainer grafis. Saya yakin ini akan berguna karena saya juga sudah mencoba dan menggunakan aplikasi ini dalam kegiatan sehari-hari.

Ok, langsung saja kita mulai!

1. Doit.im

Mulai kewalahan karena terlalu banyak projek yang harus dilakukan dalam satu waktu? Tenang saja, dengan aplikasi ini, semua projek yang masuk bisa kita klasifikasikan berdasarkan deadline dan prioritas. Sehingga kita dengan mudah mengetahui projek mana yang harus di update atau di selesaikan dalam satu hari.

Tentu saja selain karena fungsinya yang berguna, saya memilih Doit.im di banding aplikasi Task Management yang lain karena desainnya yang menarik! Kamu harus mencobanya!

2. Focus Booster

Bagi kamu yang sering bekerja sambil browsing internet, saya jamin waktu kerja kamu pasti sedikit. Lebih banyak browsing kan? Tenang saja semua pasti mengalaminya, termasuk saya juga (terkadang internet bisa membius kita!).

Nah, dengan aplikasi ini kita bisa lebih mendisplinkan diri kita dalam bekerja. Yang menarik adalah kita bisa mengatur waktu fokus kita selama maksimal 40 menit, lalu alarm akan berbunyi dan memberikan waktu 5 menit (atau lebih) untuk istirahat sebelum memulai sesi 40 menit berikutnya. Patut di coba! Saya sendiri sudah merasakan manfaatnya!

3. Font Picker

Desainer grafis pasti mempunyai koleksi font yang banyak, ini sudah menjadi kebiasaan, kita terbiasa menginstall semua font yang kita dapat. Karena kita berpikir, “siapa tahu suatu saat butuh”. Tidak salah memang, malah sudah seharusnya.

Saya yakin mayoritas kita memilih font yang akan kita pakai, langsung di Photoshop atau Illustrator. Permasalahannya muncul pada waktu kita memilih font. Pada Photoshop sungguh manjadi pengalaman yang kurang mengenakkan karena tampilan font yang kurang besar, sehingga detail font dalam list tidak terlihat jelas. Sedangkan di Illustrator, kita memilih satu font lalu menekan panah bawah atau atas untuk melihat detail font satu persatu (bagaimana kalau kita mempunyai ratusan atau bahkan ribuan font?) sungguh membuang waktu.

Lain halnya dengan Font Picker ini, fungsinya langsung pada intinya, tidak banyak basa basi.  Tapi dapat memberikan list dengan cepat dari semua font yang ada di komputer kita. Dan yang sangat membantu adalah kita bisa mengetik kata/kalimat yang kita mau, sehingga memilih satu dari ratusan font menjadi sangat mudah dan menyenangkan!

4. Pixus

Teman-teman web desainer pasti memerlukan aplikasi ini. Dengan Pixus, mengukur elemen pada sebuah website menjadi begitu mudah. Tidak perlu lagi menduga-duga atau melihat source file untuk mendapatkan ukuran yang tepat.

Saya sering menggunakan Pixus untuk mengukur jarak antar elemen pada website. Dengan begitu kita tahu apakah harus menambah atau mengurangi jarak dari desain yang telah kita buat sebelumnya. Bisa juga di gunakan untuk membuat perencanaan tata letak. Intinya dapat mengukur apapun selama itu masih di jangkauan 72 dpi dan dalam satuan Pixel.

5. Color Browser

Sesuai dengan namanya, aplikasi ini digunakan untuk membuat color pallete pada suatu desain. Kita bisa menentukan terlebih dulu kombinasi warna apa saja yang kita pakai untuk projek desain kita nanti. Dari hasil kombinasi ini kita akan menemukan mood yang tepat.

Tidak lupa juga ada fungsi untuk menyimpan kombinasi yang telah kita buat. Untuk menggunakan warna yang telah kita pilih, kita tinggal melihat kode warna nya, lalu di paste di photoshop atau program desain yang lain.

Sebagai tambahan, kita bisa melatih kepekaan kita terhadap warna dengan belajar membuat berbagai kombinasi warna di waktu senggang

Kesimpulan

Aplikasi di atas adalah elemen penunjang cara kerja kita sebagai desainer. Intinya adalah displin waktu dan keterbukaan untuk mengeksplorasi berbagai kemungkinan baru yang akan berdampak pada hasil akhir kerja keras kita.

1. Instagram

With over 10 million users worldwide Instagram has quickly risen to the top of the photo app favorites list because of the stylish way it integrates your photos and filter effects with those of your friends and “followers.” With a real time feed, similar to Facebooks “News Feed” you can watch the world through the eyes of millions, join groups and comment on each others photos. Its a great way to meet and follow the lives of other creative photogs or just regular people having some fun.

Highlights for me in the Filters Gallery include a Lomo and a 1977 retro-effect as well as a tilt-shift blur effect that is really amazing when shooting cityscapes or landscapes. Choose a border to finish off your image and show the world who you are.

2. Postagram Postcards

There are a lot of recent apps that make it easy to send a printed photo postcard in the mail, but this app features the highest quality printing possible. They print out on thick, glossy photo postcards at 300dpi resolution and you can use any photo app you want to take the pictures. Then it costs only .99 cents to have your photo delivered anywhere in the world.

Features I like are the personalized profile photo of the sender and a 140 count character message is included. You can also choose a photo from Facebook if you want or shoot within the app itself.

You can send invitations, thank you notes, baby announcements and more. Much more cost effective then having custom announcements created and shipped and so much more fun.

3. Hipstamatic

Their tagline is “digital photography never looked so analog.” Yes! When you open the app, the viewfinder becomes the back of an old 35mm camera. You can swipe through many lens, flash and film options (try the John S lens with Ina’s 1969 film) these come included and will transport you into the 60′s for only a buck ninety-nine.

Of course there are many options you can try together that come included and when you run out of fun ideas for what’s included, you can buy “hipstpaks” which are geographically themed for .99¢ My personal favorite being The Mission pak which has an eggshell white camera case and a 1935 style film. So pretty!

Of course all the social buttons are integrated giving you the ability to add your pics straight to facebook and/or flickr. Or if your feeling especially proud, you can enter your photos to weekly Hipstamatic contest where you win cash and prizes. Its truly the complete package!

4. Pocketbooth

This may be for the novice photographer, or the novice at heart, but who doesn’t love a good photobooth session with friends? Apple choose this app as one of the hottest trends of 2010. It turns your iPhone or iPad touch into a vintage photobooth and with the cool feature of AirPrint capability, you can print the strips directly from the app with a compatible printer. What I like about this app is its retro feel and lightheartedness, it doesn’t claim to be for professionals its just for having fun and sharing good times with friends. It perfectly replicates the intimacy, spontaneity and fun of a traditional photobooth, without the claustrophobia! Bring it to a party and see what happens next!

5. Pic Collage

Pic Collage is fun and very simple to use to create photo collages. Never have to mess with scissors and gluesticks again! You can import photos from your device, Facebook and your friends’ Facebook to source images for collages. You can add a variety of filter effects and make edits to the photos.

This app also integrates the social media channels nicely and as a bonus has a print and ship feature available.

Great idea if you are archiving a large gathering like a wedding or birthday or even if you are having some friends over and don’t want to have to share all the photos you took individually. Nice way to be creative and time efficient simultaneously! An awesome use of this app would be as an age archive for your kids, if you took pictures at 1 month, 3 months, 6 months… 3 years etc, you could have a visual all in one place to see your child as (s)he grows. It goes by so fast, what a cool way to capture time passing by.
